However, with these updates, the Omnibox will now complete addresses “based on any word you’ve previously used to search for a website.” For example, typing “flights” will direct users to google.com/travel/flights without needing to first input “google.com.” This significant improvement aims to provide users a more seamless and efficient browsing experience by minimizing the time spent typing and searching for the desired website. Additionally, the enhanced autocomplete feature is expected to reduce the number of incorrect website visits resulting from typos, further improving user satisfaction with the Chrome browsing experience.

The update also features improved detection of incorrectly spelled URLs, offering suggestions based on websites previously visited on desktop, Android, and iOS devices. Chrome will even recommend popular websites users may not have visited or whose URLs may have been entered incorrectly. This enhanced functionality simplifies and simplifies users’ browsing experience, making it easier to access their desired webpages efficiently. By providing relevant suggestions and recommendations, Chrome is positioning itself as a more user-friendly and intuitive browser for users on multiple devices.

Domestic tool manufacturers like Naura and etching device maker AMEC are obtaining more bids from Chinese foundries as companies prioritize local alternatives over foreign-made equipment. This shift towards relying on local equipment suppliers has been driven by the need to reduce dependency on foreign technologies and circumvent the export controls imposed by the U.S. government. In turn, this presents a new opportunity for domestic manufacturers to innovate and expand their footprint in the global semiconductor market, ultimately strengthening China’s homegrown semiconductor industry.

Increased bids for domestic manufacturers

Huatai Securities reported that from January to August 2023, domestic manufacturers secured nearly half (47.25%) of all machinery equipment bids placed by Chinese foundries. This number jumped to 62% between July and August, indicating a shift in the industry as businesses prepare for worsening U.S. limitations and concentrate on self-sufficiency, as promoted by Chinese President Xi Jinping. As a result, local machinery equipment manufacturers are experiencing a surge in demand, which is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of China’s domestic machinery industry. Additionally, this shift towards self-sufficiency is likely to reduce dependency on foreign imports, thereby aiding the nation in navigating the global market challenges posed by the ongoing trade restrictions.

This surge in sales highlights the growing demand for advanced technology within the country and demonstrates the strengthening capabilities of China’s local equipment manufacturers in catering to this demand. Despite this current growth, Chinese manufacturers will likely face difficulties as the U.S. and other nations’ restrictions are predicted to cease accumulating foreign-made chip equipment. The restrictions may prompt Chinese manufacturers to rely heavily on domestic technology, leading to possible limitations in innovation and the quality of their products.

Equipment-related revenue of China’s top 10 domestic equipment manufacturers increased by 39% year-on-year in the first half of 2023, generating $2.2 billion in sales. China faces challenges in developing sophisticated technologies like extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines necessary for creating advanced chips, with the U.S. restricting access to such tools. They will need to reduce dependence on foreign technologies and circumvent export controls imposed by the U.S. government — which the government will be watching for.

Back in February 2022 when Russia invaded Ukraine — people across the globe were introduced to the term “OSINT.” This acronym stands for open-source intelligence. It means people using photographs that they post to their social media channels, that are images called “free-to-access-satellite-images.

The negative impact of so-called “verified” OSINT (open source intelligence) accounts on X (Twitter) has been emphasized by independent news platform 404 Media, especially regarding the confusion they create in the Israel-Palestine information landscape. Some of these Twitter accounts tend to selectively share information to support their biases, often exacerbating the already tense situation between Israel and Palestine. As a result, they contribute to the spread of misinformation and hinder the efforts of objective journalism aimed at unraveling the complex dynamics at play in the conflict.

What is OSINT and its role in journalism?

OSINT accounts use publicly accessible resources, such as social media images and videos, to verify or disprove claims about happenings in global crises. OSINT, or open source intelligence, has become an increasingly important tool for journalists and researchers to gather real-time information and corroborate facts. By analyzing and cross-referencing this publicly available data, these professionals can provide accurate and unbiased reporting on global events, helping the public better understand complex situations.

However, during the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, these accounts have increasingly disseminated deceptive and poor-quality content motivated by profit and engagement rather than truthfulness. As a result, social media users have been exposed to misleading information, exacerbating tensions and fueling misunderstandings about the complex geopolitical situation. It has become increasingly important for individuals to verify the content’s accuracy to form informed opinions and engage in constructive discussions about the conflict.

Experts consulted by 404 Media have pointed out that verified accounts, which were once dependable sources of information, have led to the “unprecedented” propagation of misinformation. In recent years, many verified accounts have unwittingly become catalysts for the spread of false news and misleading information, causing significant disruptions in social media networks. Consequently, users are left questioning the credibility of these verified sources as trust in reliable information channels continues to deteriorate.

Modifications to Twitter’s verification process and encouragement for spreading false information have exacerbated the problem, transforming the platform into a cluttered and untrustworthy space for precise conflict reporting. As a result, users seeking accurate and reliable news on global conflicts often navigate through a chaotic mix of genuine updates, manipulative propaganda, and outright disinformation.

Users need to be critical and discerning about the content they consume, and for journalists and researchers to continue striving for accurate and unbiased reporting in the face of these challenges.

State-supported hackers from Russia and China have taken advantage of a fixed vulnerability in the widely utilized WinRAR archiving utility for Windows, raising concerns among cybersecurity specialists. The weakness, referred to as CVE-2023-38831, enables assailants to conceal harmful scripts in archive files disguised as innocuous images or text files. Cybersecurity company Group-IB revealed that a minimum of 130 traders suffered device compromises due to this exploit. Moreover, these attacks have led to substantial financial losses and data breaches for the affected organizations. Experts warn businesses and individuals to remain vigilant and update their software regularly to mitigate the risks posed by state-sponsored cyberattacks.

Rarlab, the firm responsible for WinRAR, issued an upgraded version (6.23) on August 2 to tackle this vulnerability. However, Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG) discovered that multiple state-supported hacking groups persistently exploited the flaw, focusing on users who have not yet updated their software. This alarming revelation highlights the importance of regularly updating software to protect against potential cyber threats. As a result, users are strongly urged to update their WinRAR software to version 6.23 or later to secure their systems from these targeted attacks.

Links to Russian and Chinese hacking organizations

TAG’s investigation connected the exploit to hacking organizations linked to Russia and China, including the infamous Russian military intelligence unit Sandworm, which participated in the 2017 NotPetya ransomware assault. These groups are known for their highly sophisticated cyber operations, posing a significant threat to global security. Governments and private cyber security firms have been working diligently to counter their malicious activities and protect sensitive data from being compromised.

Additionally, the Russian-bolstered hacking group APT28, also known as Fancy Bear, was seen exploiting the WinRAR vulnerability. They directed their efforts at users in Ukraine through a different email campaign, acting as the Razumkov Centre – a public policy research institute in the nation. This malicious campaign spread emails containing a compromised version of the institute’s report on the presidential election, allowing the hackers to infiltrate the user’s systems. As a result, unsuspecting victims inadvertently exposed their sensitive information and networks to cybercriminals, providing ample opportunities for data breaches and system disruptions.

Rivian, also known for manufacturing the R1T pick-up trucks and R1S sport utility vehicles, raised its production target for the entire year of 2023 to 52,000 vehicles in August. The utilization of social media in conflicts is not a novel concept. Still, the audacity of these attacks underpins growing concerns about the safety and well-being of captured individuals and their exposed families.

To combat the malicious activities of Hamas, Israeli authorities are partnering with social media platforms to identify and remove such harmful content quickly. Simultaneously, Israeli officials support those affected by the distressing cyber attacks, including family members and friends who have fallen victim to Hamas’s online infiltration.

Israeli families targeted by Hamas’ cyber attacks

Thirteen Israeli families spoke to investigators, sharing their experiences in dealing with the recent cyber invasion. According to their accounts, members of Hamas infiltrated their imprisoned relatives’ Facebook groups, Instagram pages, and WhatsApp conversations, inciting violence and issuing menacing calls through the hostages’ mobile phones. The unprecedented cyber tactics employed by the terrorist organization sowed chaos among the victims and their families, intensifying feelings of vulnerability and despair.

Friends and family members of the abducted individuals describe their initial anticipation of receiving updates about their loved ones, only to then feel overpowered by the realization that terrorists have seized their personal social media accounts. The duplicitous tactic of Hamas compounds the pain, anguish, and uncertainty of these unfortunate family members who find themselves trapped in an emotional bind.

In addition to causing psychological stress, the unauthorized access to victims’ social media accounts raises crucial questions about privacy and security regarding the safety of their personal information.

Yesterday afternoon, Marc Andreessen dropped a massive 5,200-word manifesto-type piece about the world of AI. He rages about everything being said against AI, such as even the very idea that AI might not be good. Social responsibility — scoff! — Safety measures, tech ethics, AI could take jobs, hurt the environment, or find ways to corrupt children? — double and triple scoff.

“Technology is the glory of human ambition and achievement, the spearhead of progress, and the realization of our potential.” –Marc Andreessen
Andreessen wants all skeptics to step aside and let technology transform the world –and that skeptics need to step aside and let technology transform the world. Andreessen doesn’t take too kindly to regulation, mentioning that “our enemy is corruption, regulatory capture, monopolies, cartels.”
I have heard Marc Andreessen, cofounder and general partner at Andreessen Horowitz, speak many times — and loved these conferences and speeches. This “manifesto” made me wonder if his writings are what he really thinks — or, more likely, Andreessen has billions invested in AI.

Having massive investments in something, as Andreessen does, tends to make one “pro-whatever” the investment is in.

Andreessen lit into the “lies” that all society is saying about technology. Fortune noted that Andreessen wrote much of the piece like his writing were a poem, with frequent line breaks — and called this writing a “Techno-Optimist Manifesto.” We are all “Techno-Optimists,” aren’t we? The world hopes for the best and is cheering on all the beautiful options technology has brought us.
Fortune also said that on the Andreessen Horowitz’s website, he says “We believe” 113 times and published it on Substack. And this manifesto discusses every topic on the technology spectrum. He discussed chatbots, the energy sector — and even the meaning of life. He addresses that the free market will lift all people from poverty and that centralized systems don’t care for or look out for the individual (mainly because they don’t have to.)
Here is another quote from the Andreessen manifesto:
“We believe the techno-capital machine of markets and innovation never ends, but instead spirals continuously upward.” Of course, as Fortune’s Rachel Jones writes — “Andreessen never mentions the hundred of years’ worth of market crashes — except to mention the “COVID disruption” as if that has been the world’s only issue.

SpaceX’s satellite constellation, Starlink, has announced its collaboration with T-Mobile to bring direct-to-cell text messaging services to areas with limited cellular coverage. By making use of the satellite network, rural and remote locations will now have access to reliable communication services. The partnership plans to commence its beta service in late 2023, with the full launch of voice, data, and IoT services scheduled for 2025.

Several international cellular providers, including Rogers, Optus, One NZ, KDDI, and Salt, have joined SpaceX and T-Mobile in increasing global connectivity. As they work together to provide seamless internet access across various nations, more providers are expected to participate in the initiative to further broaden cellular networks, particularly in areas where traditional infrastructure is complex to deploy.

Innovative technology enhances connectivity

Starlink’s satellite network utilizes an eNodeB modem, acting as a cell tower in space, to allow users on the ground to connect to the internet. Using the partner spectrum within their respective countries, the satellite technology can offer high-speed and low-latency connections to users worldwide. The combination of satellite capabilities and local infrastructure will bridge the digital divide and foster global communication.

Initially, the direct-to-cell satellites will be deployed on SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket. However, transitioning to Starship for future deployments is expected to revolutionize cellular network expansion globally. The increased payload capacity offered by Starship will make distributing the direct-to-cell satellites more efficient and seamless.

Upon reaching their orbit, the satellites will connect via laser backhaul to the entire Starlink constellation, offering rapid and seamless communication between satellites. In addition to voice and text messaging services, SpaceX plans to introduce IoT services on the direct-to-cell network. By linking IoT devices through standard LTE protocols, satellite technology will improve communication efficiency among IoT devices and extend connectivity to remote areas with limited network access.

The acquisition of Loom, with more than 25 million users globally, will enhance its collaboration and make its customers more effective. Loom has more than 5 million video conversations per month as a valuable asset to their company.

Atlassian wants everyone to communicate better (and more) at work and in life

Joe Thomas, co-founder and CEO of Loom, said, “Loom’s vision is to empower everyone at work to communicate more effectively wherever they are, and by joining Atlassian, we can accelerate their mission to unleash the potential of every team.”

Company shares of Atlassian fell more than 6.5% in the stock market on October 12, 2023. Third-quarter earnings for Atlassian stock are due Nov. 2.

Loom has been harnessing the power of AI to help with video transcripts, summarize documents, and workflow development. Loom was founded in 2015 and has raised over $200 million, including its recent $30 million series B in 2019.

Mike Cannon-Brookes, Atlassian co-founder and co-CEO, said, “Async video is the next evolution of team collaboration, and teaming up with Loom helps distributed teams communicate in deeply human ways.” Atlassian says it plans to acquire the company with the cash it has on hand, and the transaction is expected to close sometime in the third of next year, pending regulatory approval.

Block acquires music service Hifi

Jack Dorsey, the founder of Block — which used to be Square — has now acquired Hifi, a music-focused fintech startup.

HiFi was launched in the US in 2020. Matt Pincus joined the HiFi board and became an investor in the firm from MUSIC, a joint venture with LinionTree.

HiFi Founder and Chief Executive Officer Damian Manning said on LinkedIn, “I could not be more excited to share that as of today, HiFi is joining Block, furthering our shared purpose of economic empowerment. We’re grateful to our investors, partners, and members for helping us achieve this remarkable milestone. We are thrilled about our future together!”

Damian Manning (HiFi) says that Hifi dubs itself a “financial rights organization” and says that he is building innovative services working in concert to financially empower the creator class.”

Launched in 2020, Hifi was all about preserving the financial rights of the artists and was considered an economic, financial rights organization for these artists. All royalty income came through a dashboard that could aggregate big data from all distribution services, including music labels and Performing Rights Organization.

We Must be Better at Paying Royalties to Artists and Creatives for Their Services

As is well known, many artists have their property stolen or used for free. Cash Flow was born recently as part of the Hifi company, with a royalty acceleration service. This service was founded to pay artists a salary every month.

The second of Block’s investments, Hifi in 2023, follows the music streaming service Tidal, which was purchased in 2021. Block saved Tidal from its financial struggles. However, AP News‘ Chancellor Kathaleen Saint Jude McCormick said that the purchase of Tidal was a bad business decision; however, Tidal is the parent.

The Hifi music-focused fintech startup is also joined by Cash App, the buy-now-pay-later platform Afterpay. This is Block’s premier mobile payment service.

According to Block, “Block Inc. is an American multinational technology conglomerate founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey and Jim McKelvey and launched its first platform in 2010. It has been traded as a public company on the New York Stock Exchange since November 2015 with the ticker symbol SQ.”

Several high-risk security vulnerabilities have been found in ConnectedIO’s ER2000 edge routers and the cloud-based management platform, raising questions about IoT security. Malicious actors could exploit these weaknesses to execute harmful code and access sensitive information. An analysis by Claroty’s Noam Moshe revealed that an attacker might use these vulnerabilities to entirely compromise the cloud infrastructure, execute code remotely, and leak customer and device details.

As the adoption of IoT devices continues to rise, concerns about the overall security and protection of user data in these devices are becoming increasingly important. Addressing these vulnerabilities, ConnectedIO has been urged by both researchers and cybersecurity experts to implement effective security measures and provide timely updates to ensure users are protected against potential threats.

“The vulnerabilities in 3G/4G routers could expose thousands of internal networks to serious threats. IoT hazards may allow bad actors to gain control, intercept traffic, and infiltrate Extended Internet of Things (XIoT) devices.” The issues affect ConnectedIO platform versions v2.1.0 and earlier, specifically the 4G ER2000 edge router and cloud services. Attackers could chain these vulnerabilities together to execute arbitrary code on cloud-based devices without needing direct access.

By exploiting these weaknesses, cybercriminals can easily bypass security measures and gain unauthorized access to sensitive information. Organizations and individuals must update their devices to the latest firmware version to mitigate the risks associated with these vulnerabilities.

Additional weaknesses were discovered in the communication protocol between the devices and the cloud, including using fixed authentication credentials. These can be exploited to register an unauthorized device and access MQTT messages containing device identifiers, Wi-Fi settings, SSIDs, and passwords from routers. Attackers gaining access to this information could potentially monitor or manipulate the devices, putting user privacy and security at risk.

A threat actor could impersonate any device using leaked IMEI numbers and force the execution of arbitrary commands published via specially designed MQTT messages through a bash command with the opcode “1116.” Consequently, this security vulnerability exposes a myriad of devices to potential cyberattacks, leading to unauthorized access, data breaches, and even full system control. It is essential for users and manufacturers to ensure their devices are updated with the latest software patches to mitigate such risks and enhance protection against these attacks.

Manufacturers need to address these vulnerabilities and implement robust security measures to protect both the communications between devices and the cloud and the information stored within these devices.

The online store, powered by MeetKai’s AI-first technology platform, is inspired by the real-life Hornets Fan Shop located at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Hornets Virtual Fan Shop is accessible on desktop, mobile devices, or VR headsets. The store includes 3D animations, avatars, and virtual try-on options.
