Major suppliers to Apple in Taiwan recorded another substantial sales decline in September, falling 16.4% year-over-year to NT$1.24 trillion ($38.7 billion). The drop comes despite the launch of Apple’s latest iPhone models and new Android devices from competitors and follows similar data from the PC market.

According to an Oct. 12 Bloomberg report, the sales decline extends a downward trend that began in 2022 for Taiwan’s contract chipmakers and electronics assemblers that supply Apple and other tech giants. The September figures mark the steepest monthly drop since June. For the first nine months of 2023, sales have fallen 8.8% compared to the same period last year.

The new iPhone 15 lineup went on sale in September, with upgrades to the base model receiving positive reviews. However, the iPhone launch did little to boost suppliers’ sales. This highlights the smartphone market’s maturity and Apple’s challenges in spurring demand for new models.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, recorded a 13.4% sales decline in September. This was better than many analysts feared, reflecting TSMC’s strength in non-smartphone segments like high-performance computing chips.

Device assemblers like Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) and Compal Electronics posted double-digit percentage declines in September. Quanta Computer, another major Apple contract manufacturer, also saw significant decreases — revealing challenges faced across Apple’s Taiwan-based assembly ecosystem.

The sales downturn reflects both softening consumer demand for personal electronics like smartphones and market saturation in developed countries. The next catalyst for growth in the smartphone market is unclear, as new features like foldable displays have yet to go mainstream.

Going forward, Apple and its suppliers must target growth avenues outside smartphones and PCs, including new product categories like AR/VR headsets. Software and services have become increasingly vital to Apple’s results as hardware sales moderate — but, in the near term, Taiwan suppliers face more uncertainty and potential downside amid a sluggish global economy and weak electronics demand.

oculus quest

Although Apple and Meta have yet to release their first consumer virtual reality headsets, the tech giants are already working on the subsequent iterations.

According to an Oct. 8 Bloomberg report, Apple’s first headset, the Vision Pro, will likely launch in early 2023. The Vision Pro features high-resolution cameras that enable mixed reality, a powerful Apple-designed M2 chip, and crisp micro-OLED displays.

However, the current Vision Pro prototype is large and heavy, and testers have reported neck strain from wearing the device for prolonged periods.

For the next version, Apple engineers want to reduce the headset’s weight and size to improve comfort. One option under consideration is an over-the-head strap to better distribute the weight. However, designing lighter hardware components may be the best long-term solution. Apple also aims to simplify prescription lens integration for glasses wearers.

Meta prepping Quest 3 release

Meanwhile, Meta is preparing to release its Quest 3 headset next week at a starting price of $500. The Quest 3 offers upgrades like faster performance and a refined design compared to the prior model — but at $200 more than the Quest 2, Meta wants to lower costs on future versions to expand mainstream appeal.

One strategy is to launch a new entry-level headset without controllers, allowing hand gestures to control the interface. This would lower the production cost, with some rumors suggesting a price under $200 — albeit at the expense of functionality. Meta also plans a high-end replacement for the failed $1,500 Quest Pro.

Though confidence is high at Apple, Meta sees the Vision Pro as a potential game-changer in making virtual reality mainstream. One Meta employee compared the anticipation to how the mobile industry awaited the original iPhone reveal:

“We’re in the ‘afraid of Apple’ stage.”

Both companies continue to have long-term ambitions in augmented reality devices. Apple paused its AR glasses project last year due to immature technology — but it may restart development to fulfill CEO Tim Cook’s vision of sleek and discrete AR spectacles. Meta remains committed to eventual AR spectacles and is already testing display components.

Apple reportedly plans to increase production in India to around $40 billion — a more than five-fold increase from its current $7 billion — in the next four to five years.

The news — which ReadWrite has yet to verify independently — originates from news agency PTI, which cited government sources that said: “Apple has plans to increase production in India to over $40 billion in the next 4-5 years. It has crossed $7 billion in the last fiscal.”

“They don’t have any plans to participate in IT hardware PLI,” the officer added — implying the iPhone creator has no plans to make iPads or Macbooks in India. “They may come at a later stage but as of now their focus is to scale up existing production levels.”

However, The Cupertino-based firm reportedly plans to manufacture Airpods in India from next year.

Apple outpaces Samsung in smartphone exports from India

Apple is the largest exporter of mobile phones from India — where it, for the first time, made its new made-in-India iPhones available on launch day earlier this month. The iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max hit store shelves on Sept. 22, with Indian-made units available both domestically and abroad.

Apple has reportedly outpaced, for the first time, Korean rival Samsung in smartphone export volumes from India — shipping 49 percent of India’s total 12 million shipments in the June quarter versus Samsung’s 45 percent.

Industry sources are widely reported as claiming that Apple’s iPhone 15 series registered 100 percent growth compared to the iPhone 14 series on launch day.

iPhone

For the first time, some iPhone 15 models could be available in India — where Apple has been building some of its famous phones since 2017 — on launch day.

The news — first reported by Bloomberg — follows widespread reports that contractor Foxconn would aim to manufacture more iPhone 15 models at the Tamil Nadu, India facility than before as part of Apple’s plan to diversify manufacturing amid supply chain risks stemming from U.S.-China tensions.

The availability of iPhone 15 models in India — where Apple aims to eventually increase smartphone production from seven percent to 25 percent — on launch day will largely depend on Foxconn’s ability to scale production and the availability of components. However, the expected arrival of Indian-made iPhones alongside more common China-made units is widely heralded as a big win for the tech giant.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 — which is rumored to have thinner bezels, a titanium frame and USB-C charging — today at its Cupertino headquarters alongside its iOS 17, watchOS 10 and iPadOS 17 operating systems.

This article has been updated with additional information.

Companies like DJI Technology Co. in China have propelled the country to the forefront of the global drone industry. China’s technological prowess and low prices have made the country a global leader in the drone industry. Concerns about the possible military use of drones have been heightened in light of the current conflict in Ukraine.

Concerns about the potential use of civilian drones for military purposes have been brought to light by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has now lasted for over 17 months. According to reports, both sides in the conflict have been using drones made in China for reconnaissance and possibly attacks. As a result, the government in China has taken measures to stop civilian drones from being turned into weapons.

As of right now, China is restricting the export of certain types of drones in an effort to keep them from being used for “non-peaceful purposes.” These restrictions apply to drones that meet certain criteria, such as being able to fly beyond the operators’ line of sight, staying in the air for longer than 30 minutes, having attachments that can throw objects, or weighing more than 7 kilograms (1512 pounds).

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce issued a statement explaining the rationale behind these export restrictions. There was a warning about the potential for civilian drones with advanced features to be misused for military purposes. The ministry emphasized China’s stance against the military’s use of civilian drones and framed the increase in drone regulation as a responsible move by a major power.

As a precautionary measure in the wake of the crisis in Ukraine, some Chinese civilian drone companies have voluntarily halted all operations in hotspots. This action demonstrates their dedication to preventing their drones from being used in conflict. On the other hand, the Chinese government has claimed that the United States and Western media have spread lies about Chinese drone exports.

In April of 2022, DJI Technology Co., a major player in the drone industry, announced that it would be leaving the Russian and Ukrainian markets to prevent its drones from being used in armed conflict. The company’s decision to distance itself from any potential military applications and emphasize responsible use of its products is reflected in this move.

U.S. intelligence reports that Beijing may have provided equipment with potential military applications to the Russian military has cast a shadow of suspicion over China’s economic and trade cooperation with Russia. Chinese officials have defended their country’s business ties to Russia, calling them “normal economic and trade cooperation.” The report, however, does raise concerns about the fallout that could result from China’s backing of the Russian government’s military operations.

If China keeps backing Russia’s war effort in Ukraine, the Biden administration has threatened unspecified consequences. There is no indication in the recent report as to which specific trade between China and Russia would result in retaliation from the United States, but it does highlight the potential diplomatic tensions that could arise from China’s involvement in the conflict.

The Chinese government’s position on the conflict in Ukraine is consistent with its long-held policy of not meddling in the affairs of other countries. Chinese officials have publicly backed Russian justifications for the attack and blocked efforts to censure Russia at the UN. Recent export restrictions on drones, however, show that China is serious about acting responsibly as a global power.

China must strike a balance between protecting its economic interests as a leading drone manufacturer and upholding its global responsibilities as a responsible major country, as evidenced by its decision to impose export controls on civilian drones.

China hopes to show its dedication to world peace and stability by taking steps to stop the misuse of drones for military purposes. It remains to be seen what effect these limitations will have on China’s drone industry and international relations, but it is clear that China is acting to address concerns brought to light by the conflict in Ukraine.

It will become increasingly important for all parties involved to strike a balance between advancing technology and compromising global security as the situation develops.

Orkney, a group of islands off the northeastern coast of Scotland, has become the first place in the UK to offer drone mail delivery. This groundbreaking initiative, called the Orkney I-Port operation, is a collaboration between Royal Mail and drone technology company Skyports. The project aims to improve service quality and reduce wait times for residents of the remote islands of Graemsay and Hoy in the Atlantic.

The Orkney Islands’ unique geography and proximity make them an ideal testing ground for this innovative transport system. Electric drones can now overcome obstacles like bad weather and remote locations, ensuring faster and more efficient package delivery. The drones, such as the Speedbird Aero DLV-2, can carry up to 6 kilograms of mail.

The project director at Skyports Drone Services, Alex Brown, highlighted the positive impact on remote communities, emphasizing how drone technology revolutionizes mail services, providing efficient and timely delivery while reducing emissions from traditional vehicles. Royal Mail is committed to reducing emissions in its operations, and incorporating drones aligns with this goal.

Royal Mail has been at the forefront of adopting new technologies to enhance delivery services. Their partnership with Skyports for drone mail delivery in Orkney demonstrates their dedication to innovation and meeting customer needs. Head of Royal Mail’s drone trials, Chris Paxton, expressed pride in delivering via drone to some of the UK’s most remote communities.

The three-month test of the drone mail service will determine its viability and efficiency. If successful, the service could become a permanent part of Orkney’s delivery infrastructure, benefiting local communities and showcasing the potential of drone technology in logistics.

The drone mail system operates primarily on Graemsay and Hoy islands in the Orkney archipelago. Packages are first loaded onto delivery vehicles at the Kirkwall branch of Royal Mail. The drones then take off from Stromness to deliver mail to Graemsay and Hoy, addressing logistical challenges caused by the region’s topography.

Skyports, a leader in drone technology, operates the Speedbird Aero DLV-2 aircraft used for inter-island flights. The Connected Places Catapult, a UK government agency, played a crucial role in planning, funding, and implementing the project.

Orkney’s drone mail delivery has the potential to transform not only isolated island communities but also other places facing similar delivery difficulties. Drones’ efficiency and speed can significantly improve service levels and reduce carbon emissions from conventional vehicles, aligning with sustainability objectives.

The data collected during the trial period will determine the feasibility of expanding the drone mail service. If successful, the Orkney model could pave the way for similar programs all throughout the UK.

Orkney’s adoption of drone technology for mail delivery is a significant step in the logistics industry’s embrace of drones. Beyond mail delivery, drones have the potential to revolutionize transportation for various purposes, including medical supplies and infrastructure monitoring.

Integration of drones into existing delivery systems will require changes to regulatory frameworks and infrastructure. The success of the Orkney I-Port operation can provide valuable insights into the regulatory, operational, and logistical aspects of widespread drone adoption.

The introduction of the drone mail service in Orkney marks a major development in UK shipping history. Royal Mail and Skyports’ collaboration utilizes drone technology to ensure timely delivery to outlying communities, demonstrating dedication to emission reduction and forward-thinking solutions.

With each new iPhone release, Apple continues to break new ground in technological advancement. The introduction of the all-display iPhone X was a major step forward, despite the presence of a small notch at the top. Apple has been on a mission to further shrink bezels ever since. But recent rumors suggest the tech giant is taking this quest seriously by creating an iPhone with no side bezels at all. This innovative layout would provide an entirely borderless screen, completely altering how we use our mobile devices.

TheElec claims that Apple has asked its OLED screen partners, Samsung Display and LG Display, to create a new prototype with no visible borders around the screen’s perimeter. This action exemplifies Apple’s dedication to revolutionizing the smartphone experience through innovative design.

Thin-film encapsulation (TFE) and under-panel cameras (UPC) are two technologies the report says Apple wants to improve. With TFE technology, manufacturers can make AMOLED screens that are durable, lightweight, and flexible. Apple can get a thinner bezel without compromising the quality of the display by enhancing TFE. The absence of a front-facing camera thanks to under-panel camera technology would also make for a more aesthetically pleasing display.

Making a screen with no borders is a significant challenge. There are a number of technical hurdles that must be cleared. One such difficulty is reducing the thickness of Thin Film Encapsulation (TFE) without compromising its ability to prevent the infiltration of oxygen and moisture. Display reliability and longevity could be jeopardized if the TFE were thinned out too much.

It’s no secret that Apple takes its hardware selection very seriously. Optical distortion and increased fragility were two of the main reasons the company had previously rejected curved-edge display technology. Apple, on the other hand, is working toward a solution in which the entire front of the iPhone is a display.

While the promise of an iPhone without side bezels is exciting, it’s worth noting that realizing this vision could take years. Apple’s strict quality standards guarantee that every item sold lives up to the company’s lofty standards. Therefore, when exactly an iPhone without side bezels will join the lineup is unknown.

Extensive study, prototype creation, and testing are required for the development of new display technologies. As an innovator, Apple has always been committed to providing its customers with state-of-the-art products. Even if it means waiting longer for a bezel-less iPhone, it is essential to prioritize quality and user experience, as is the case with any technological advancement.

Without a doubt, the smartphone market as a whole would be profoundly affected by an iPhone with no visible bezels. This ground-breaking design would transform how iPhone owners utilize their devices in more ways than one.

Additionally, a bezel-less screen may provide fresh opportunities for UI development. With more room to play with, app designers could get more creative with their layouts. This has the potential to improve the iPhone’s user interface and enable developers to create more interactive and immersive app experiences.

The pursuit by Apple of a bezel-less iPhone is representative of the general trend toward increasing screen size. The smartphone industry has been trending toward thinner bezels and smaller overall devices in recent years. The pinnacle of this trend is exemplified by bezel-less designs, which give users a larger area on which to perform various actions.

Other smartphone makers are following Apple’s lead and experimenting with bezel-less designs. Each company is vying for the attention of tech-savvy consumers by producing the most immersive and visually stunning devices possible.

In conclusion, Apple’s dedication to innovation in smartphone design is on full display with the possibility of an iPhone with zero bezels. Apple is laying the groundwork for a future without bezels by partnering with OLED screen suppliers and focusing on improving key technologies.

Although there will be obstacles to overcome on the way to a bezel-less iPhone, users can rest assured that Apple will deliver a product that is both functionally superior and aesthetically stunning. One thing is certain as we eagerly await the release of a bezel-less iPhone: Apple is setting the standard for a fascinating future in smartphone design. Prepare yourself for the dawn of bezel-free brilliance.

Glowforge Aura Laser Cutting

Laser cutters have long been a staple in various industries, offering precision and versatility in cutting and engraving materials. However, these machines’ complexity and high price tags have limited their accessibility to professionals. That is until now. Enter Glowforge Aura, a revolutionary laser cutter designed to make the technology more approachable and affordable for a wider audience.

Glowforge Aura is the latest addition to the Glowforge family, renowned for its commitment to ease of use and innovation. Priced at $1,199, the Aura is smaller, more affordable, and easier to operate than its predecessors. Its user-friendly features make it a perfect tool for educational institutions, crafting enthusiasts, and light prototyping.

One of the standout features of the Aura is its unparalleled ease of use.

Glowforge has gone above and beyond to simplify the laser-cutting process. The built-in camera scans a QR code on the material, automatically selecting the appropriate cutting, scoring, or engraving settings. While Glowforge provides a selection of materials tailored for the machine, users can experiment with their own materials using the machine’s built-in settings as a starting point.

The Glowforge Aura can carve a wide range of materials, including wood, leather, acrylic, paper, stone, and even metal. This versatility opens up endless possibilities for creative projects. Whether you’re designing intricate jewelry, customizing phone cases, or crafting prototypes, the Aura delivers exceptional results across various materials.

The Aura offers flexibility when it comes to ventilation.

It can be vented out a window or used indoors with the help of an air filter. The air filter seamlessly pairs with the Aura, automatically extracting smoke and fumes from the device during operation. However, it’s worth noting that some users have reported issues with the air filter failing to activate consistently. The Glowforge team has acknowledged this and is working on software updates to address the problem.

“We just implemented your suggestion: if the printer isn’t connected, the button turns teal and can be used as a switch to toggle between off, medium, and full power,” shared Glowforge CEO, Dan Shapiro. “That should serve as a backup in case anyone in the future winds up here again. That update just went out so all new owners will have it.”

The Aura’s built-in camera takes the guesswork out of the cutting process. The web-based control software lets users see exactly where the cuts will be made, ensuring precise material placement. Users can select the type and order of cuts, optimizing the workflow for their specific projects.

However, some users noted minor discrepancies between the software’s visual representation and the cutting area. Careful alignment and occasional adjustments may be necessary for intricate designs.

Know the Limitations. There are very few

While the Glowforge Aura offers impressive ease of use and versatility, it is essential to consider its limitations. The machine is designed for craft-grade applications and may not meet the demands of professional users accustomed to more industrial-grade laser cutters. The Aura has certain material thickness limitations, so projects requiring engraving on materials over an inch thick may not be feasible.

Additionally, some users have reported initial difficulties with certain materials, such as laser-engraving phone cases. However, with patience and experimentation, these challenges can be overcome.

Glowforge Aura integrates seamlessly with the Magic Canvas functionality, a feature that eliminates users needing to design their own prints. With Magic Canvas, users can transform simple descriptions into tangible art forms, including hardwood jewelry, slate coasters, and more. This functionality opens up a world of possibilities for crafters and those looking to engage in creative projects without needing advanced design skills.

Testing the Glowforge Aura

In testing the Glowforge Aura, various materials and applications were explored. The paper emerged as a surprising favorite, with users utilizing the Aura to create intricate spray-paint stencils and functional parts that were sturdier and faster to produce than 3D printing. The Aura’s accessibility and affordability make it an ideal tool for hobbyists, maker spaces, and crafters seeking to create repeatable patterns and prototypes.

Glowforge offers a range of laser cutters to cater to different user needs and budgets. The original Glowforge Pro, priced at $7,000, and the Glowforge Plus, priced at $5,000, target the advanced amateur market. These machines provide additional features and capabilities for those seeking more professional-grade performance. The Aura complements these models by offering a more accessible entry point into the world of laser cutting.

The Glowforge Aura is now available for purchase directly from the Glowforge website and select retail channels. With its user-friendly interface, versatile material compatibility, and affordability, the Aura is set to empower a new generation of creators, from students to hobbyists and crafters alike.

As technology advances, the Glowforge Aura stands at the forefront of making laser cutting more accessible and intuitive. By combining ease of use, versatile material compatibility, and innovative features, Glowforge is revolutionizing the crafting and prototyping landscape. The Aura’s arrival heralds a new era of creativity and opens doors for individuals to unleash their imagination in ways never thought possible.
